The Challenge

The Ministry of Education identified a growing need for a centralised platform dedicated to te reo Māori teaching and learning resources. Educators, learners and whānau were seeking a unified digital space that reflected te ao Māori values while supporting modern online learning behaviours.

The platform needed to:

  • Serve as the hub for te reo Māori resources
  • Reflect authentic Māori identity and cultural context
  • Support multimedia-rich content including audio-based learning tools
  • Enable intuitive navigation for teachers and students
  • Provide flexible publishing workflows for internal content teams
  • Scale sustainably as additional resources were developed

This required cultural collaboration, thoughtful design evolution, and a content architecture capable of supporting long-term growth.

Our Response

We collaborated closely with the Ministry’s internal teams, SilverStripe, Māori language experts and design partners to deliver Kauwhata Reo as a culturally grounded, CMS-driven digital platform.

Working within Silverstripe CMS, we leveraged modular content blocks to create a flexible and scalable publishing framework. This approach enabled:

  • Structured, nestable teaching resources within reusable content areas
  • Integrated audio components to support pronunciation and storytelling
  • Multimedia-rich page layouts without compromising performance or accessibility
  • Dynamic homepage elements that bring visual storytelling and movement to life

As visual concepts evolved during the project, we translated illustration assets into a cohesive digital experience that honoured the authenticity of te ao Māori while maintaining usability and clarity.

Backlog planning, technical architecture and UX decisions were guided by close collaboration between cultural advisors, designers and developers — ensuring both cultural integrity and technical robustness.

The Outcome

Kauwhata Reo now operates as a central digital hub for te reo Māori teaching and learning resources, providing educators and learners with a culturally aligned, easy-to-navigate platform.

The platform delivers:

  • A unified destination for Māori language educational materials
  • Multimedia-enhanced learning experiences
  • Scalable content management workflows
  • A user journey that reflects Māori worldviews while remaining intuitive for all audiences

By combining culturally authentic design with modern web architecture, the Ministry now has a sustainable platform that supports the continued revitalisation and growth of te reo Māori education nationwide.

The Conclusion

Kauwhata Reo stands as a thoughtfully designed, culturally grounded digital platform that supports te reo Māori education across Aotearoa.

By combining collaborative design, scalable CMS architecture and authentic visual storytelling, the Ministry of Education now has a sustainable digital foundation to support Māori language learning for years to come.
